The fruit is small to medium in size, round to oblate in shape. The skin is usually orangey red through to a dark black colour, with a green background that turns yellow. The skin has small lenticels (pores) that look dark on the lighter patches of skin,

Origin
An old American heirloom variety, originally a chance seedling found in 1893 on Ben Frost's property in Durham, Arkansas. Thought to be a cross between Jonathan and either Winesap or Black Arkansas varieties.
Pollination
Needs a pollinator, will probably be pollinated by any known diploid that also flowers mid-season, e.g. Akane, Cox, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Kingston Black, Lady Williams, Pink Lady
