There are two great reasons to do some budding (summer grafting) this year; the first is to continually improve your garden so that every fruit tree is pulling its weight, i.e., fulfilling the purpose you have in mind for it. The second reason is to learn and practice your grafting skills. Grafting is one of those skills we only get to practice occasionally (summer and winter), so it’s important to do a little each year to remind yourself of how it’s done and improve your skills. Plus, try to find at least one person to teach how to bud this summer—teaching a skill is one of the best ways of learning it.
