Also called a "tree tomato", tamarillo is in the nightshade family. The flesh is red with plentiful small seeds, and is sweet/tangy, tasting like a cross between a tomato and a kiwifruit (or guava or passionfruit, depending on who you ask). The skin is red or yellow, bitter, and not eaten.

Tamarillo fruit is delicious eaten fresh or can be cooked in the same way you'd use a tomato. High in fibre, calcium, iron, phosphorus plus vitamins A and C.

Production Notes
Subtropical but thrives in temperate areas if protected from frost. Trees are very fast growing and can reach 2-3 metres tall in 18months to 2 years. They are also short-lived and survive only 7 - 12 years.
